Servant Salamander 1.52
Servant Salamander was originally developed because there was no other small, fast,
friendly, Norton Commander-like file manager for Windows NT (Win32 native code).
Development began in summer 1996 and was very slow because the project has a very low
priority. We expected it to be a short term job, but the
reality was quite different. The first unofficial version was really small, but
it lacked some features, and so we added them one by one. After some
time, we realized that it's a nearly complete file manager, and we decided
to release the first freeware version (October 1997). User
feedback was very positive, so we continued and developed Servant
Salamander version 1.52 (1.27 MB C++ source code, 42000 lines). Servant Salamander 1.52
is as small as it is because of effective use of Win32 API functions. We
used our WinLib library instead of MFC, OWL, or some other big powerful software
library. An executable was compiled using Watcom C/C++ 11.0 compiler.

First let us apologize to everyone we have forgotten to include to the following
list. There are hundreds of users whose ideas were considered. We thank them all.
The basic Servant Salamander team is listed below (in order
of appearance).

English and Czech translations, user feedback, etc.
- Jan Rysavy, Tomas Kopal, and Pavel Schreib - consultants
- Marek Lutonsky - author of web pages design.
- Kurt Stecher - author of German translation.
- Dennis Mooibroek - author of Dutch translation.
- Andreas Troschka and Renato Gabriele Ucci - authors of Italian translation.
- Igor V. Polyakoff - author of Russian translation.

Servant Salamander 2.0
The next phase of Servant Salamander development began in summer 1998. The new version
extends version 1.52, although we originally thought about a completely new
version containing new technologies (Unicode, complex plugins architecture, etc.).
We also changed the compiler to MS Visual C++ 6.0, changed many parts of
the application, and added many new functions and features. Version 2.0
(December 2000) has more then four as much source code (5.8 MB, 186 000 lines, all
plugins included) as version 1.52. Because of new bug-reporting systems, we have
caught and fixed many bugs caused by differences in Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000 versions.
